Pulse

Intro

This is a crappy, buggy, unfinished version of a rhythm game I started a long time ago. The game has memory leaks of Exxon Valdez proportions, and absolutely terrible gameplay. Its available here for download to serve as a warning of what poor programming practices produce.

Originally intended to be a rhythm game, you play to your own music through a complex beat detection algorithm, I've given it up because the code base became too large, unwieldly, and buggy.

Release Notes

If you have a dual core AMD 64 processor, install the dual core fix included in the root directory of the game. Torque Game Engine 1.3 doesn't like dual core processors.

First, take a moment to enjoy the beautiful demo. Let the begin button flash for a bit while you enjoy the pulsing techno music turning the landscape into something of a rave. This is entertaining to just watch, in my opinion.

Now, click on begin, and explore the menu a bit. You'll find out that the menu doesn't work! Really too bad, becuase its just so nice. To access gameplay, you'll have to hit escape, click yes, click "Game Start!", and then "Choose your own song." You are presented with a list of media files in the pulse/data/songs/user directory. These are all songs you can play the game to. You can add your own Mp3's too. The Mp3's included in the zip are copyrighted, and I have no authorization to distribute them. If any of the copyright holders have a problem, contact griffyboy0@gmail.com, and I'll take them down.

When the game finally loads, place your left ring finger on the "S" button, left middle on the "E" button, left pointer on the "F" button, right pointer on the "J" button, right middle on the "I" button, and right ring on the "L" button. When a red square matches your moving reticle, press the "E" button. Green corresponds to "F", Blue to "J", and Yellow to "I" Eventually, you will find that the beats no longer match up to the reticle anymore. Simply press the "S" button to rotate counterclockwise, or the "L" button to rotate clockwise.

The Original focus of the game was to get as high of a combo as possible, and the game would speed up as you got a higher combo, allowing your reticle to travel around the track faster and faster. The object was to complete the most laps around the track, or to beat the player next to you to the required number of laps.

I dropped the game because controls were akward, gameplay was vomit-inducing, and the market was flooded with decent rhythm games by the time I had a working prototype. Take this for what you will. I provide no support if it doesn't run on your machine.
